By picking themselves up and working towards a new beginning, they can do so together – the phrase “ittai”, which means to become one united body.Īt the recapitulation section “A’”, the first theme is heard again (but in a different key, C major). This bridge signifies the Hope that the Japanese should yearn for, holding on to the Hope that their lives will start to get better. At first this was just new material that I liked, but on reflecting, I felt it has a calming effect after the ‘nightmare’ that Japan was going through. I wrote an expected bridge before the actual melodic recapitulation at bar 118. It also acts as a transition from this section to the next – a transition that Japan has to take to come out of this emotional and economical turmoil. The addition of a flute cadenza is to present the virtuosic capabilities of the instrument, as well as to further intensify the section. As the piece builds up to the climax in this section, it becomes more articulate and exciting (semiquavers and triplets used). This section depicts the disasters that hit Japan, where Japan was in turmoil and the people were in great despair, deep pain and grief. With the shift in the harmony to a minor key (G minor) to show the darkness in this section, the “B” section is more intense. The theme presented at “A” is more lyrical and soothing, and the time signature of 6/8 was used so that it could bring out a livelier feel. The friendliness of the Japanese and their courteous behaviors has touched me each time I visit Japan. The structure is in Ternary form (A-B-A’), where “A” represents the lively and peaceful atmosphere in Japan before disaster struck. Could the people still pick themselves up and move on?Įntitled “Let there be Hope”, this piece written for flute and piano is dedicated to the victims of Japan’s dual disaster. The country was in chaos, people lost their homes and lost their loved ones. This dual disaster let Japan to face its most serious crisis since World War ll. When I heard that the most powerful earthquake with the magnitude of 8.9 hit Japan on March 11 2011, followed by a tsunami that swept over cities and farmland and killed as many as 20,000 people, I was devastated at such a catastrophe. I love the landscape, the people and the culture. Japan is a country that I visit most during the holidays. "Let there be Hope" is an original composition composed by Rachel Ho in 2012.
